Bethesda Aqueduct | Structure: Fresh Water TunnelRemoval: 10,200 linear feet @ ½ - 1-inch Owner: Army Corp of EngineersLocation: Bethesda, MDEngineer: Army Corp of EngineersWork: Tunnel rehabilitation, tunnel concrete repair, tunnel hydrodemolitionContractor: Advance Construction Techniques, LTD Maple, Ontario The project involved cleaning the interior of the tunnel and installing a 3-inch thick wire mesh reinforced lining. Initially the cleaning was performed using hand lanes, however this proved to be slow and did not remove all the parging from the surface. Rampart developed the Tunnel Master, which utilizes a continuously rotating arm with a rotating water jet. This combination proved very effective with production rates reaching 1,000 liner feet per shift. The use of UHP water thoroughly cleaned the surface allowing for an excellent bond between the shotcrete and the existing surface.
