Membrane Removal Specs

1 – General

1.01 Scope

  1. The work consists of providing all labor, material and equipment necessary to remove 100% of the existing bonded and unbonded urethane, epoxy, rubberized membrane from concrete surfaces as indicated on the drawings and in these specifications without damage to the surface using high-pressure water jets. The original surfaces may be smooth or broom finished.
  2. The removal shall include all vertical surfaces such as curbs, walls, barriers and areas not accessible to the high-pressure water jetting robotic equipment using hand-held water jetting equipment.
  3. Mechanical removal methods such as scrappers, scarifiers and grinders will not be allowed.
  4. The work is defined as square unit of removal area.

1.02 Submittals

A. At the time of bid submittal:
  1. References, including name, address and telephone number from at least five projects for whom the company has performed membrane removal with satisfactory results.
  2. A description of the quantity and types of equipment the contractor proposes to use for this project including water consumption and operating pressure.
  3. Qualification statement of the contractor stating the length of time the company has been performing membrane.
B. After award of contract:
  1. Contractor’s safety program
  2. Method of disposal of membrane and water.

2 – Materials

  1. Water shall be potable water obtained from a fire hydrant, municipal source or well. Lake or river water will not be allowed.
  2. The use of chemicals, abrasive materials, grinders, detergents or salt water will not be allowed.

3 – Equipment

  1. Concrete removals shall be performed with engineer approved ultra-high pressure water jetting equipment capable of removing 100% of the existing membrane. The equipment shall be capable of operating at a minimum of 35,000-psi water pressure with flow rates not exceeding 32 gallons per minute. The equipment used for the membrane removal shall be a robotic self-propelled vehicle with all functions programmable and repeatable. The removal head shall be a minimum of 12-inches wide and contain a minimum of 16 nozzles. The removal head must be capable of rotating at a minimum of 1,500 rpm. The equipment shall be capable of removing a minimum of 6,000 square feet per 8-hour shift.
  2. The equipment shall be capable of removing 100% of the caulk and sealant materials from random cracks and control joints and cove sealant along the perimeters. The removal shall leave the surface clean and ready to accept new sealant material.
  3. Hand-held water jetting equipment (hand lance) shall be used to remove membrane in areas inaccessible to the robotic equipment as well as vertical surfaces such as curbs and walls. The hand lance shall operate at a minimum of 35,000 psi and shall use a minimum of five nozzles. The nozzles shall rotate at a minimum of 3,000 rpm.

4 – Execution

  1. The work shall be performed at the locations designated on the plans or as directed by the engineer.
  2. Remove 100% of the membrane deposits using ultra-high pressure water jets without damaging the concrete surface. Removal shall include all vertical surfaces such as turn-ups, curb faces and walls.
  3. Remove 100% of the caulk and sealant materials from random cracks and construction joints and cove sealant along the perimeters. Complete removal may be accomplished in conjunction with the membrane or separately using hand lances or a combination of both.
  4. Do not perform work unless the temperature is a minimum of 40º F and rising and the pavement temperature is a minimum of 35º F and rising.
  5. Membrane removal may be performed during inclement weather provided the membrane and debris are contained.
  6. All drains shall be protected with filtering material to prevent the membrane or other debris from entering the drains.
  7. The debris shall be collected and properly disposed.
  8. Any damage to the pavement surface caused by the contractor’s operation shall be repaired at the contractor’s expense. Prior to performing the repair, the engineer shall approve repair methods and procedures.

5 – Quality Control

A. Test Area

  1. Prior to the start of the work the Contractor shall perform a test removal at a location designated by the engineer of a minimum of 1,000 square feet to demonstrate the quality of the membrane removal. The UHP pump shall be set at optimal operating pressure and flow rate and the forward speed of the vehicle adjusted to remove 100% of the membrane deposits.
  2. If in the sole opinion of the engineer, the equipment does not produce satisfactory removal of the coating or the unit does not meet the minimum of 5,000 square feet per eight hour shift requirement, then the engineer may require that the equipment be removed from the project at no cost to the owner and replaced with equipment that can meet the requirements of the specifications.

B. Visual Inspection

  1. The engineer shall determine by visual inspection if 100% of the membrane deposits have been removed.
  2. Visual inspection shall include a close inspection of the pavement surface to determine if the water jet has contacted a minimum of 100% of the surface and removed the membrane from that surface.

6 – Method of Payment

A. Measurement

The unit of measurement shall be a square unit of membrane removed and accepted by the engineer.

B. Payment

Payment shall be made at the bid unit price for “Membrane Removal”.
